Institution: University of Oulu

Year: 2023

Terence McSweeney is a PhD student in biomedical engineering at the University of Oulu, Finland. His work is part of the Marie-Skłowdowska Curie ITN project titled Disc4All and focuses on machine learning and multi-omics to tackle the interpretation of imaging data in intervertebral disc degeneration. This work is based primarily on data from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort and looks to discover clinically relevant data-driven phenotypes of disc degeneration. As a Fulbright Student Awardee at the UCSF Core Center for Musculoskeletal Biology in Medicine, Terence will expand the scope of his research by investigating imaging data from additional cohorts in the USA. This will also allow Terence to draw on the extensive expertise in spine-related artificial intelligence and biomedicine available at UCSF under the guidance of Prof. Jeffrey Lotz and colleagues.
