Award: Fulbright Irish Scholar Award
Institution: Dublin City University
Year: 2024
Paul van Kampen is a physics education researcher and associate professor at Dublin City University. He teaches physics to science and physics students and physics and mathematics teachers. Paul’s main interests lie in helping students develop conceptual understanding through research-based development and implementation of educational strategies and materials. He has received the DCU President’s Awards for Teaching and Learning and for Research Impact, and the Irish National Academy for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning award for teaching excellence. As a Fulbright scholar with the University of Maine, Paul and his hosts will use dual process theory to investigate students’ intuitive and analytical thinking as they solve physics problems and check their results. We will study how students contextually activate and coordinate elements of their physics and mathematics knowledge throughout the process.
