Pádraic Whyte
Award: Fulbright Irish Scholar Award
Institution: Trinity College Dublin
Year: 2023
Pádraic Whyte is associate professor of English and Director of Research at the School of English, Trinity College Dublin. He is a director of the M.Phil programme in Children’s Literature and is co-editor of ‘Children’s Literature Collections: Approaches to Research’ which won the International Research Society for Children’s Literature Edited Book Award, 2019. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of The Ark, a cultural centre for children. As a Fulbright Scholar, he will explore the relationship between Ireland and Hawai’i in terms of storytelling, islands, and identities in children’s literature. He will travel to Hawai’i to mark the centenary of the publication of Padraic Colum’s collection of Hawaiian myths ‘At the Gateways of the Day’ – which was the result of an invitation from the Hawaiian Legislature to visit the islands and write up Hawaiian myths and legends as stories for younger readers – and examine the complexities of Colum’s rewritings.
