Olwyn Mahon

Award: Fulbright Irish Scholar Award

Institution: University of Limerick

Year: 2023

Olwyn Mahon, PhD, is a Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Limerick. Olwyn obtained her Bachelor’s in Neuroscience and M.Sc in Immunology from Trinity College Dublin. Her PhD, based between the School of Biochemistry and Immunology and Trinity Centre for Biomedical Engineering, focused on the developing immunomodulatory implantable scaffolds for enhanced regeneration of bone defects. Her current research focuses on the development of representative in vitro model systems of metastatic urological cancers.
Olwyn’s Fulbright Scholar Award will be hosted at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, and will explore the use of CRISPR genome editing mouse models of bone metastasis and multiomic single cell sequencing approaches to understand the tumour microenvironment in patients with metastatic urological cancers. Her goal is then to apply these findings to a model system to identify factors that contribute to cancer cell behaviour and immunotherapy.
