Kevin Mc Dermott
Award: Fulbright Irish Scholar Award
Sponsor: Creative Ireland
Kevin Mc Dermott is an established writer of children’s fiction, an experienced arts-in-education practitioner, and an advocate for creative writing in education.
Kevin has a background in education and teacher training. His research interests include dialogic and conversational pedagogy. Since 2015, Kevin has worked on a number of school-based creative-writing residencies, with the support of Poetry Ireland and the JCSP Demonstration Library Project. These residencies have taken place in schools in areas of social and economic disadvantage.
Kevin believes that young writers and novice writers, from disadvantaged communities, deserve the best mentoring and encouragement possible. As a Fulbright scholar, working with the National Writing Project in Berkeley, he hopes to develop the theory and practice of encountering young writers in the creative writing workshop with the purpose of facilitating them to explore, interrogate and celebrate their experience, in the circumstances and particularity of their own world, in their own words.
