26 North Americans presented with awards to study Irish in Galway

10th July 2014: Nineteen Canadian and seven American Irish language learners were presented with awards at Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge in An Cheathrú Rua in the Galway Gaeltacht today.

Awards were also presented to six Irish Language Instructors selected by the Ireland Canada University Foundation (ICUF) to teach Irish at a range of locations across Canada for the academic year 2014-15.

These awards are the result of ongoing collaboration the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has developed with ICUF and the Ireland-United States [Fulbright] Commission for Educational Exchange. They reflect the deep interest in the Irish language in the United States and Canada where, every year, many Irish language learners choose to attend courses at the National University of Ireland – Galway, Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, An Cheathrú Rua and other venues. The awards are financed in partnership with universities and institutions in both Canada and the United States.

The Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley T.D. congratulated all of the recipients and their teachers for their efforts in the promotion and preservation of the Irish language. “These exchanges,” Minister McGinley said, “provide Ireland with a valuable opportunity to showcase the culture and creativity of the Gaeltacht and help to identify future possibilities for resource development, collaboration and exchanges.”

The Minister of State also noted that many of those receiving awards have neither been to Ireland before nor have any family connections with the country but all share an extraordinary interest in one of Europe’s oldest living languages.

Dámhachtainí chun staidéar a dhéanamh ar an nGaeilge i nGaillimh bronnta ar 26 dhuine ó Mheiriceá Thuaidh

10 Iúil 2014: Bronnadh dámhachtainí ar 19 Cheanadach agus ar sheachtar Meiriceánach atá ag foghlaim na Gaeilge ag Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge sa Cheathrú Rua i nGaeltacht na Gaillimhe inniu.

Bronnadh dámhachtainí freisin ar sheisear Teagascóirí Gaeilge a roghnaigh Fondúireacht Ollscoile na hÉireann agus Cheanada (ICUF) chun Gaeilge a mhúineadh i láithreacha éagsúla ar fud Cheanada sa bhliain acadúil 2014-15.

Toradh iad na dámhachtainí seo ar an gcomhoibriú leanúnach a d’fhorbair an Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta le ICUF agus le Coimisiún [Fulbright] na hÉireann – na Stát Aontaithe um Malartú Oideachasúil. Léiríonn siad an tsuim mhór sa Ghaeilge atá ag daoine sna Stáit Aontaithe agus i gCeanada, áit a roghnaíonn go leor foghlaimeoirí Gaeilge gach bliain freastal ar chúrsaí in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh, Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, an Cheathrú Rua agus in ionaid eile. Maoinítear na dámhachtainí i gcomhpháirtíocht le hollscoileanna agus le hinstitiúidí i gCeanada agus sna Stáit Aontaithe.

Thréaslaigh an tAire Stáit sa Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta, Donnchadh Mac Fhionnghaile T.D., le gach duine ar bronnadh dámhachtain orthu agus lena múinteoirí as an iarracht a dhéanann siad an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn agus a chaomhnú. “Tugann na malairtí seo,” a dúirt an tAire Mac Fhionnghaile, “deis luachmhar d’Éirinn cultúr agus cruthaitheacht na Gaeltachta a chur os comhair an phobail mhóir agus cabhraíonn siad le féidearthachtaí a shainaithint d’fhorbairt acmhainní teagaisc, do chomhoibriú agus do mhalairtí amach anseo.”

Luaigh an tAire Stáit freisin nach raibh go leor díobh siúd ar bronnadh dámhachtain orthu in Éirinn riamh cheana agus nach bhfuil nasc teaghlaigh acu leis an tír ach go bhfuil spéis ollmhór acu ar fad i gceann de na teangacha beo is sine san Eoraip.
