Clúdaíonn an deontas a fhaigheann na rannpháirtithe táillí teagaisc agus costais lóistín ach tá siad féin freagrach as costais taistil go hÉirinn agus aon chostais eile.

I ráiteas a d’eisigh an tAire Stáit Donnchadh Mac Fhionnlaoich T.D. dúirt sé:

“Tá lúcháir orm go bhfuil an Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta ag comhoibriú le Coimisiún Fulbright chun a thuilleadh eolais ar an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn agus úsáid na teanga a mhéadú ar fud na Stát Aontaithe.  Is tionscnamh nuálach agus fiúntach é Scéim Dámhachtainí Samhraidh na Gaeltachta agus bainfidh an dream a bhfuil na Dámhachtainí bronnta orthu, chomh maith leis an Ghaeltacht féin, tairbhe as an tionscnamh.  Tá tionchar mór ag an tionscnamh ó thaobh cairdeas a chothú agus spéis agus tuiscint a mhúscailt i dteanga agus i gcultúr saibhir na hÉireann, rud a fhanfaidh leis na daoine seo ar feadh a saoil.  Tá an-áthas orm céad míle fáilte a chur roimh an 30 duine ar bronnadh dámhachtain orthu agus a bheidh ag tabhairt cuairte orainn an samhradh seo.”

Dúirt Colleen Dube, Stiúrthóir Feidhmiúcháin Choimisiún na hÉireann – Stát Aontaithe um Malartú Oideachasúil (Coimisiún Fulbright) agus í ag trácht ar na dámhachtainí:

“Tá rath tagtha ar Scéim  Dámhachtainí Samhraidh na Gaeltachta le dhá bhliain anuas. Tar éis scéim phíolótach na bliana seo caite bhíomar báite ag fiosraithe faoin gcomórtas i mbliana. Bhí rannpháirtithe na bliana seo caite ina n-ambasadóirí iontacha ar son na Gaeltachta agus iad ag scaipeadh an scéil ar fud na Stát Aontaithe.

“Tugann scéim na nDámhachtainí Gaeltachta deis thar cionn do shaoránaigh SAM iad féin a thumadh in oidhreacht shaibhir na hÉireann. Beidh siad ag freastal ar chúrsaí a thairgeann, ní hamháin, ranganna teanga, ach ceol traidisiúnta, scéalaíocht agus seanchas chomh maith le turasanna i gcuid de na ceantair is áille in Éirinn.

“Mar aon le tacaíocht a thabhairt d’fhoghlaimeoirí na Gaeilge sna Stáit tá na Dámhachtainí Gaeltachta ag soláthar buntáistí follasacha do gheilleagar na hÉireann.  Mar aon lena gcuid ama, tá an 30 rannpháirteach ag caitheamh a gcuid airgid féin ar tháillí eitilte idirnáisiúnta agus ar  chostais taistil, lóistín agus siamsaíochta breise fhad is atá siad anseo in Éirinn. Is eiseamláir shármhaith iad na dámhachtainí seo de chomhpháirtíocht phríobháideach phoiblí in earnáil na turasóireachta cultúrtha.

Táimid lánchinnte go mbainfidh rannpháirtihe na bliana seo – idir fhoghlaimeoirí agus mhúinteoirí na Gaeilge ó SAM – taitneamh agus tairbhe thar na bearta as a dtumadh i gcúrsaí Gaeltachta ar fud na hÉireann. Níl amhras orainn ach go roinnfidh siad a n-eispéaras ríluachmhar le go leor daoine eile sa bhaile sna Stáit in áiteanna ar nós Wisconsin, Illinois, California, Texas, Montana, New York, Connecticut agus Minnesota.”

30 US Citizens Awarded Grants to Study Irish

Gaeltacht Summer Awards

30 US citizens have been awarded Gaeltacht Summer Awards from the Ireland – United States [Fulbright] Commission for Educational Exchange.  These awards, now in their second year, offer US citizens, currently studying Irish in the United States, grants to participate in Irish language courses in Ireland’s Gaeltachtaí during the summer. The Awards are supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht and the National Lottery.

The 30 awardees will attend two-week or month long courses in:

  • Áras Mháirtín Uí Chadhain, NUI Galway, Carraroe, Galway
  • NUI Galway, International Summer School
  • Oideas Gael, Glencolmcille, Donegal
  • Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, Ballyferriter, Kerry

Awardees have received a monetary award which covers tuition and accommodation for the course of their choice in Ireland but are responsible for their own travel and other related costs.

Commenting on the awards, the Minister of State with responsibility for the Irish language, Dinny McGinley T.D. said:

“I am very pleased that the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is working in partnership with the Fulbright Commission to promote greater knowledge and use of the Irish language throughout the US.  The Gaeltacht Summer Awards Scheme is an innovative and worthwhile initiative that is mutually beneficial to the awardees and to the Gaeltacht.  It is instrumental in forming bonds of friendship and a lifelong interest and understanding of the rich language and culture of Ireland.  I am delighted to extend a ‘céad míle fáilte’ to the 30 awardees who will be visiting us this summer.”

Speaking about the awards, Ms. Colleen Dube, Executive Director of the Ireland – United States [Fulbright] Commission for Educational Exchange said;

“The Gaeltacht Summer Awards, now in their second year, have gone from strength to strength. Following the pilot scheme last year we were inundated with enquiries for this year’s competition.  Many of last year’s winners have been invaluable ambassadors for Ireland’s Gaeltachtaí by spreading the word in the US.

“The Gaeltacht Summer Awards scheme offers US citizens an unparalleled experience of being immersed in Ireland’s rich heritage on courses that offer not only language learning, but excursions, traditional Irish music and story-telling in some of Ireland’s most captivating locations.

“The Gaeltacht Summer Awards are instrumental in supporting Irish language learners in the US while also providing tangible economic benefits to Ireland.  Each of the 30 awardees has not only invested time in coming to Ireland but their own finances on international airfares, additional travel, accommodation and entertainment costs while in Ireland.  These awards are a superb example of private – public partnership in the cultural tourism sector.

“We are quite sure this year’s awardees – which include US students and teachers of the Irish language – will thrive and benefit enormously from their immersion in Gaeltacht courses around the country.  We have no doubt they will share their priceless experiences with many others in their home states which include Wisconsin, Illinois, California, Texas, Montana, New York, Connecticut and Minnesota.”
