Who can apply

Potential applicants should ensure that they meet the following eligibility criteria before applying:

Scholar / Professional status:

  • Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant Irish language discipline and substantial Irish language teaching experience.
  • Alternatively, the candidate may be an outstanding independent scholar or an authority in the Irish language.

Excellence in their academic, professional and personal qualifications:

  • applicants must be able to demonstrate a record of scholarly and teaching in the Irish language and or Irish language studies
  • a clear sense and or demonstration of leadership and
  • an understanding of the Fulbright Program and the role and benefit of being a 'Fulbrighter'.

All candidates should have:

  • a proven track record of working, publishing and lecturing in Irish
  • be comfortable working and teaching in an Irish-language environment
  • an impressive publication record and considerable teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate level

Competency:

  • All candidates must have competency in the Irish language

Project statement:

  • Applicants should choose the lecturing or lecturing / research category of scholar award.
  • Applicants must outline the program of research and teaching they intend to complete at the US institution, what added value they will bring to Irish Language studies in the US, and how the period in the US will enhance their knowledge, skills and understanding in the discipline.
  • Applicants will be asked to upload supplemental documents (e.g. research proposal, course syllabi, bibliography, etc) as part of the application.

Eligibility / Citizenship:

The following applicants are eligible:

  • Irish citizens who are resident on the island of Ireland
  • Irish citizens who are ordinarily resident in other EU member states and who are not eligible to apply for a Fulbright award in their country of residence
  • EU citizens who are ordinarily resident in Ireland. A person is deemed to be ordinarily resident in the State if s/he has been living here for the past three consecutive years.

The following applicants are ineligible:

  • US citizens / dual nationals and holders of US immigrant visas (green cards), or applicants for same, are not eligible to apply
  • Applicants with extensive previous experience in the United States (e.g. currently studying at or recently graduated from a US academic institution, resident for five or more years in the previous six years).
