Fulbright Student Awards are for post-graduate applicants who intend to enrol on a US Masters or PhD degree program or conduct independent research (minimum 6 months) as part of an Irish or European PhD program. The awards are only available for one academic year but students may remain in the US for the full duration of their academic program if it is greater than the year.
The following Fulbright Student Awards are on offer in 2010 - 2011:
- Fulbright awards in any discipline including deaf studies and the visual and performing arts.
- Fulbright awards for specific subject areas. These include:
- Fulbright – CRH Award in Business Studies
- Fulbright - Enterprise Ireland Award in Science, Technology and Innovation
- Fulbright - Environmental Protection Agency Award in Environmental Science / Policy
- Fulbright - Glen Dimplex Award in Science, Technology and Renewables
- Fulbright - Teagasc Award in Agriculture and Food Science / Policy.
Successful candidates:
- will receive a monetary award (maximum value €20,000) for a full academic year) and accident and emergency insurance while in the United States.
- can participate on a range of cultural and professional programs in Ireland and the US.
- must apply for and be granted a J-1 visa for the United States which will remain their status until the completion of their approved academic program.
- are subject to the 2-year home rule. They will not be eligible for a US residency or work visa until they have fulfilled the two-year home residency requirement of the J-1 visa.
- must take up their award within the academic year for which the award is granted. All Fulbright awards are for one academic year only. If an awardee is unable to take up the award within that period, s/he will be asked to reapply the following year.
- must submit progress reports during the course of their award.
