How to apply

Fulbright grants are selected through an open and merit-based competition.

Applicants must:

  1. Ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria.
    (CANDIDATES WHO DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE CRITERIA AND OR THE APPLICATION PROCESS WILL BE CONSIDERED INELIGIBLE AND THEIR APPLICATIONS WILL BE WITHDRAWN FROM THE PROCESS)
  2. Log onto the online system and read the instructions that are available on the homepage by clicking on #1 or downloaded here. They provide essential information about how to complete the application form. If you have any questions regarding the application process please contact the Fulbright Commission after you have read the instructions. Applicants must choose the lecturing or lecturing / research category of the award.
  3. Complete and submit the following ONLINE by 12 NOON FRIDAY 18TH NOVEMBER 2011
    • application form with all questions answered
    • supplemental documentation (CV, research statement, bibliography and, or course syllabi, letters of invitation, visa, passport and financial information)
  4. Submit 4 unstapled hard copies of the application and supporting documentation by 12 NOON FRIDAY 18TH NOVEMBER 2011 to

Awards Process Timeline

December 2011

  • Candidates will be notified of the initial status of their application.

Mid January -  Early February 2012

  • If short-listed, candidates must be available for interview in Dublin.
  • Telephone / Skype interviews are not permitted.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to be available for interview at the date and time allocated and to cover the associated costs.
  • After the interviews, the recommendations of the interview panels will be considered by the Fulbright Commission Board before being referred to the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in Washington, DC for consideration.

April - May 2012

  • Decisions will be conveyed to applicants. DECISIONS ARE FINAL

Fulbright awards are subject to the candidate:

  • receiving and accepting an offer from a recognised institution in the US
  • confirming they have sufficient funds to complete their programs / course of study
  • receiving final approval from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in Washington, DC
  • completing a medical history and examination form
  • attending a pre-departure orientation in Dublin
  • obtaining a J-1 visa.
