Laura Baker, a 2009 graduate of the Master of Urban & Regional Planning program at Virginia Commonwealth University and an urban planning professional with a private consulting firm in Washington D.C., spent her Fulbright year at the University College Dublin (UCD) researching a national strategic planning policy. Her research was designed to investigate the ways in which strategic spatial planning, via the adoption of the 2002-2020 National Spatial Strategy for Ireland and associated instruments, has influenced the local planning system of Ireland. Using a case study approach the investigation will augment the existing literature on the application and practice of strategic spatial planning in the Irish context. Laura also guest lectured on the U.S. planning system, its history and contemporary issues before undergraduate and graduate courses at UCD. “My Fulbright year in Ireland has been immensely rewarding from both a professional and personal stand point. Not only have I gained confidence in my abilities through the challenging experience of independent research, but I’ve established life-long connections among extended family and friends. “My Fulbright year has been an experience I will cherish forever.” |
